📖 The Story
When Rhenius arrived in Tirunelveli in 1820, he came as a stranger. He did not know the language, the customs, or the people.
But he believed that people should hear and understand God's Word in their own language. So he learned Tamil and dedicated himself to serving the people of Tirunelveli.
Rhenius traveled from village to village, sharing the Gospel, teaching believers, encouraging congregations, and supporting education.
Yet he did far more than preach sermons. He helped build churches, trained teachers, encouraged education, and helped establish Christian communities.
The impact of his ministry continued long after his lifetime. That is why people remembered him not simply as a missionary, but as the Apostle of Tirunelveli.
🏛️ What Did Rhenius Leave Behind?
⛪ Holy Trinity Church, Palayamkottai
In 1822, Rhenius established a congregation in Palayamkottai. Over time, this congregation grew into the historic Holy Trinity Church, one of the important churches connected with Tirunelveli Christian heritage.
🎓 Training Teachers for the Future
Rhenius understood that education could transform communities. He established the Preparandi Institution in Palayamkottai to train teachers who would educate future generations.
👧 Supporting Girls' Education
During a period when girls' education often received little attention, Rhenius encouraged educational opportunities for girls. His efforts helped lay foundations for future growth in Christian education.
🏘️ Villages of Refuge
One of the lesser-known parts of Rhenius' ministry was his role in helping establish Christian settlements across the Tirunelveli region.
In the early 1800s, some new Christian converts faced opposition and difficulties because of their faith. To support these believers, Christian settlements were established where families could live, worship, learn, and grow together.

Before 1830, the village was known as Neduvilai. Rhenius later gave it the name Megnanapuram, meaning "Village of True Wisdom."
Nearly two centuries later, the village still carries the name he gave it.

Many people associate Dohnavur with Amy Carmichael. However, the settlement existed long before Amy Carmichael arrived.
In 1827, a Christian settlement was established during Rhenius' ministry. The village was named Dohnavur in honor of Count Dohna, a German supporter who helped provide funds for purchasing the land.
⚰️ His Final Resting Place
After years of faithful service in Tirunelveli, Rhenius passed away on 5 June 1838.
He was buried in the Palayamkottai / Murugankurichi area. His tomb remains an important Christian heritage site connected with the memory of the Apostle of Tirunelveli.

📖 கதை
1820 ஆம் ஆண்டு இரேனியஸ் திருநெல்வேலிக்கு வந்தபோது, அவர் ஒரு அந்நியராக இருந்தார். மொழி தெரியாது. பண்பாடு தெரியாது. மக்கள் தெரியாது.
ஆனால் மக்கள் தேவனுடைய வார்த்தையை தங்கள் சொந்த மொழியில் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று அவர் விரும்பினார். அதனால் தமிழைக் கற்றார்.
அவர் திருநெல்வேலியின் கிராமங்களுக்கு சென்று சுவிசேஷத்தை அறிவித்தார், விசுவாசிகளை ஊக்குவித்தார், கல்வியை ஆதரித்தார்.
ஆனால் இரேனியஸ் வெறும் பிரசங்கம் செய்தவர் அல்ல. அவர் சபைகளை உருவாக்க உதவினார், ஆசிரியர்களைப் பயிற்றுவித்தார், கல்வியை ஊக்குவித்தார், கிறிஸ்தவ சமூகங்களை வளர்த்தார்.

இரேனியஸுடன் தொடர்புடைய மிகவும் சுவாரஸ்யமான நிகழ்வுகளில் ஒன்று மேஞ்ஞானபுரம்.
1830 க்கு முன்பு இந்த கிராமம் நெடுவிளை என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. பின்னர் இரேனியஸ் இதற்கு மேஞ்ஞானபுரம் என்ற பெயரை வழங்கினார்.
அதன் பொருள் "மெய்ஞ்ஞானத்தின் கிராமம்." இருநூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகும் அந்த கிராமம் அதே பெயரால் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

பலர் டோனாவூரை ஏமி கார்மைக்கேலுடன் தொடர்புபடுத்துகிறார்கள். ஆனால் ஏமி கார்மைக்கேல் வருவதற்கு பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே அந்த இடம் கிறிஸ்தவ குடியிருப்பாக இருந்தது.
1827 ஆம் ஆண்டு இரேனியஸின் ஊழிய காலத்தில் அங்கு ஒரு கிறிஸ்தவ குடியிருப்பு உருவாக்கப்பட்டது. அந்த கிராமத்திற்கு நிலம் வாங்க உதவிய ஜெர்மானிய ஆதரவாளரான கவுண்ட் டோனா அவர்களின் நினைவாக டோனாவூர் என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டது.

பல ஆண்டுகள் திருநெல்வேலியில் விசுவாசமாக ஊழியம் செய்த இரேனியஸ், 1838 ஜூன் 5 ஆம் தேதி கர்த்தருக்குள் நித்திரையடைந்தார்.
அவர் பாளையங்கோட்டை / முருகன்குறிச்சி பகுதியில் அடக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டார். அவரது கல்லறை இன்றும் திருநெல்வேலி கிறிஸ்தவ பாரம்பரியத்தோடு இணைந்த முக்கிய நினைவிடமாக உள்ளது.
