🌍 Before Dohnavur டோனாவூருக்கு முன் நடந்த பயணம்
Amy Beatrice Carmichael was born on 16 December 1867 in Millisle, County Down, Ireland. After working among young women in Belfast, she felt called to overseas missionary service.
She sailed to Japan in 1893 and later spent a short time in Ceylon. In 1895 she arrived in South India—and never returned to Ireland.
After living with the family of Robert Wilson, she also used the name Amy Wilson Carmichael.

Amy learned Tamil and travelled with a group of Indian Christian women. She called this group the Starry Cluster.
Amy formed and guided this dedicated team as they travelled, shared the Christian message and served local communities. The women brought valuable language knowledge and cultural understanding, while Amy’s faith and leadership gave the group its missionary direction.

Accounts connected with Dohnavur remember a seven-year-old girl named Preena. After escaping an exploitative situation, she was brought to Amy by a local Christian woman.
Amy and her coworkers welcomed the child into safety. Preena’s arrival helped turn Amy’s attention from travelling evangelism toward the long-term care and protection of vulnerable children.
One child did not remain just one story. Other children followed, and a new kind of family began to grow.

Dohnavur was already a Christian settlement connected with the earlier ministry of C. T. E. Rhenius. Its name honoured Count Dohna, whose support helped purchase land.
When Amy settled there, she gave the place a new and enduring purpose. From 1901 she led the growth of the Dohnavur Fellowship, turning it into a loving home, centre of protection and lifelong community for children in need.

Dohnavur was designed to feel like a family rather than a large institution. Children lived in smaller homes and were cared for by women who shared daily responsibility for their safety, learning and spiritual life.
Nurseries, schools, gardens, workshops and eventually medical care developed as the community grew. Boys were also welcomed from 1918.
Amy’s vision and motherly leadership shaped the Fellowship, and the children lovingly called her “Amma.” Indian women and men served faithfully with her, providing the daily care through which that vision became a lasting home.

Some children received at Dohnavur faced coercion, abuse or sexual exploitation connected with temple dedication and other vulnerable circumstances. Efforts to protect them sometimes brought opposition and legal difficulty.
At the same time, the history of the devadasi tradition is complex. Colonial-era missionary accounts often described Indian practices too broadly. Amy’s story should therefore be told with compassion for vulnerable children and respect for careful modern historical study.

In 1931 Amy suffered a serious fall. Her injuries, together with ongoing illness, greatly restricted her movement for the remaining years of her life.
She continued to guide the Fellowship from her room and devoted more time to letters, poems, books, prayer and mentoring. Physical limitation changed the form of her service, but it did not end it.

Amy died at Dohnavur on 18 January 1951 at the age of eighty-three. She had served in India for more than fifty-five years without returning to Ireland.
She did not want an elaborate memorial. At Dohnavur, a simple birdbath associated with her resting place bears the word “Amma”—the name by which the children remembered her.
