George Uglow Pope was an Anglican missionary, educator and student of South Indian languages. He spent many years in Tamil-speaking regions and later taught Tamil and Telugu at Oxford.

His journey to India began while he was still a teenager.

Pope was born in 1820 on Prince Edward Island. His family later returned to England, where he studied and prepared for missionary service.
In 1839, at about nineteen, he sailed to Madras. He had already begun studying Tamil and continued learning during the voyage and after reaching South India.

Pope approached Tamil with humility, discipline and a determination to understand it deeply.
தமிழை ஆழமாக அறிய வேண்டும் என்ற ஆர்வத்துடனும் தாழ்மையுடனும் ஒழுக்கத்துடனும் போப் தொடர்ந்து கற்றார்.
Pope devoted himself seriously to Tamil, learning from Tamil teachers and scholars who guided him in vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and literary meaning.
He combined their instruction with years of disciplined personal study. He learned everyday Tamil, examined classical literature and continued refining his knowledge throughout his life. What began as preparation for missionary service became an extraordinary lifelong commitment.
தமிழை ஆழமாகக் கற்க போப் தன்னை முழுமையாக அர்ப்பணித்தார். தமிழ் ஆசிரியர்களும் அறிஞர்களும் சொற்கள், இலக்கணம், உச்சரிப்பு மற்றும் இலக்கியப் பொருளை அவருக்குக் கற்றுக்கொடுத்தனர்.

Teacher and learner | ஆசிரியரும் மாணவரும்: Tamil teachers gave Pope essential linguistic and literary guidance. Pope honoured that instruction through persistent study and used what he learned to introduce major Tamil works to readers far beyond India.

🏫 Sawyerpuram and the Seminary

At Sawyerpuram, Pope gave energetic leadership to missionary education and ministerial training.

After arriving in South India, Pope served in the Tirunelveli region under the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. He was ordained in 1841.
In the early 1840s, Pope helped establish a seminary at Sawyerpuram for training teachers and church workers. He gave the institution direction, taught with determination and worked to build a disciplined centre of learning and Christian service. Tamil educators, students, copyists and local Christian families helped carry this vision forward.
தென்னிந்தியா வந்த பிறகு, சுவிசேஷத்தைப் பரப்பும் சங்கத்தின் கீழ் திருநெல்வேலி பகுதியில் போப் பணியாற்றினார். 1841ஆம் ஆண்டு குருவாக அருட்பொழிவு பெற்றார்.

Pope carried his missionary and educational calling from Tirunelveli to Thanjavur, Ooty and Bangalore.

During the 1850s Pope served in Thanjavur, giving himself to church and educational work. He later worked in Ootacamund (Ooty) and continued shaping students through disciplined teaching.
In 1870 he became principal of Bishop Cotton School in Bangalore. Across changing places and responsibilities, he remained committed to education, Christian ministry and the serious study of South Indian languages.

A bridge between literary worlds | இரு இலக்கிய உலகங்களை இணைத்தவர்: Building on Tamil scholarship and earlier translation efforts, Pope devoted years to producing detailed English editions with translations, notes and explanations. His work gave the Tirukkural, Naladiyar and Tiruvachakam a wider international readership.

🎓 The Oxford Years

Returning to England did not end his Tamil studies.

Pope returned to England in 1881. From 1884 he taught Tamil and Telugu at Oxford and continued preparing translations, grammars and scholarly notes.
He completed his Tiruvachakam edition around his eightieth year. In 1906, the Royal Asiatic Society awarded him its gold medal. He died in Oxford in 1908.

🔎 “A Student of Tamil”—Tradition and Fact
“தமிழ் மாணவன்”—சொல்லப்படும் கதையும் உண்மையும்
A popular sentence needs one careful clarification.
அடிக்கடி சொல்லப்படும் ஒரு செய்தியைத் தெளிவுபடுத்த வேண்டும்.
A well-known tradition says Pope wished to be remembered as “a student of Tamil.” The words fit the way many people remember his lifelong study.
However, that phrase is not written on his gravestone in St Sepulchre’s Cemetery, Oxford, and clear documentary evidence for the exact request has not been established. It is better presented as a tradition—not as a grave inscription.
“தமிழ் மாணவன்” என்று தன்னை நினைவுகூர வேண்டும் என்று போப் விரும்பியதாக ஒரு பிரபலமான கதை சொல்லப்படுகிறது. வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் அவர் தமிழைக் கற்றதை நினைக்கும்போது அந்த வார்த்தைகள் பொருத்தமாகத் தோன்றுகின்றன.
ஆனால் ஆக்ஸ்போர்டிலுள்ள அவரது கல்லறையில் அந்த வார்த்தைகள் எழுதப்படவில்லை. அவர் அப்படியே கேட்டார் என்பதற்கான தெளிவான ஆவணமும் கிடைக்கவில்லை. எனவே இதைக் கல்லறை வாசகம் என்று சொல்லாமல், பரவலாகச் சொல்லப்படும் ஒரு கதை என்று குறிப்பிடுவது சரியானது.
