Why is Cyrus called “anointed”?

In Isaiah 45:1, “anointed” shows that God appointed Cyrus for a special task. It does not mean Cyrus was Israel’s promised Messiah. God used this foreign ruler for Israel’s deliverance even though Cyrus had not known Him (Isaiah 45:4–5).

Bible fact-check

📖 The Bible directly says

  • God named and appointed Cyrus.
  • God stirred Cyrus to make the proclamation.
  • Cyrus permitted the exiles to return.
  • He authorized the Temple rebuilding.
  • He returned the Temple vessels.

🏺 Evidence outside the Bible

  • Cyrus’s forces captured Babylon in 539 BC, bringing the city and the Babylonian Empire under Persian rule.
  • The Cyrus Cylinder is a clay foundation inscription written after Cyrus’s conquest of Babylon. It records cult images being returned to their sanctuaries and displaced inhabitants from named Mesopotamian regions being returned to their settlements.
  • It provides historical context for Cyrus’s restoration policy, but it is not the Jerusalem decree recorded in Ezra.
  • This clay inscription does not mention Jerusalem, Judah or the Jewish exiles by name. Their return and the order to rebuild the Temple are specifically recorded in Ezra 1:1–4 and Ezra 6:3–5.

Dating note: Scholars debate the composition and dating of Isaiah 40–55. This study follows the canonical Christian reading that connects Isaiah 44:28–45:13 with the later events recorded in Ezra.

Did you notice?

Where does Cyrus say that the God of heaven gave him the kingdoms of the earth?

Ezra 1:2. Cyrus also says that God charged him to build a house at Jerusalem.

What does this teach us?

God rules over nations
God prepares deliverance
God can use unexpected people
God keeps His word

Cyrus was the instrument—God was the Deliverer

Isaiah 45 begins with God directing one ruler, but it reaches beyond Cyrus to God’s invitation to every nation:

“Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” Isaiah 45:22

Cyrus served a particular purpose in history. The LORD alone is God and the true source of salvation.

British Museum · Encyclopaedia Iranica
